Photobiomodulation
Advanced light therapy for postoperative healing and recovery.
Specialist near-infrared light therapy using the Lutronic Healite II to support tissue repair, inflammation management and recovery following surgery.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) at Lymphara Clinic
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a clinically researched, non-invasive light therapy used to support the body's natural healing processes.
At Lymphara Clinic, we use the professional Lutronic Healite II system, delivering targeted 830 nm near-infrared light to influence cellular processes involved in tissue repair, inflammation and recovery.
PBM offers an additional approach to postoperative care, either alongside Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) or as a standalone treatment where appropriate.

What is Photobiomodulation?
Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of light to influence how cells function and respond to tissue injury.
Light energy interacts with cellular components involved in energy production and signalling, helping regulate biological processes associated with inflammation, repair and healing.
Unlike laser resurfacing or heat-based treatments, PBM does not deliberately damage tissue. Treatment is gentle, non-contact and does not require additional downtime.

How can PBM support post-operative recovery?
Following surgery, the body undergoes a complex healing process involving inflammation, swelling, bruising and tissue repair.
Photobiomodulation has been studied for its effects on these processes, with clinical research reporting benefits in aspects of postoperative pain, wound healing and scar recovery. PBM may provide additional support in the following areas:

Swelling & Inflammation
Influences inflammatory pathways involved in healing and may help manage postoperative swelling.

Tissue Repair & Healing
Supports cellular processes involved in tissue repair and recovery following surgical trauma.

Bruising & Discomfort
Helps improve postoperative bruising and discomfort, supporting a more comfortable recovery.

Scar & Tissue Recovery
Supports biological processes involved in collagen formation and tissue remodelling during scar healing.
Photobiomodulation + MLD
Photobiomodulation and Manual Lymphatic Drainage work through different but complementary mechanisms.
MLD uses gentle, specialised techniques to encourage lymphatic fluid movement and support swelling management.
PBM uses targeted light energy to influence cellular activity associated with inflammation and tissue repair.
At Lymphara, both treatments can form part of an individual postoperative recovery plan, depending on your surgery, symptoms and stage of healing.

Who is photobiomodulation for?
PBM may be considered as part of recovery support following:
-
Liposuction and body contouring
-
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
-
Lipoedema liposuction
-
Breast surgery
-
Arm and thigh lifts
-
Facelift and neck lift surgery
-
Other cosmetic and reconstructive procedures
Treatment suitability is assessed individually, taking account of your medical history, surgical procedure and healing progress.
How I use PBM at Lymphara Clinic
Photobiomodulation can be offered independently or alongside specialist postoperative MLD appointments, where clinically appropriate. During treatment, the Healite II delivers near-infrared light to the selected area without direct contact with the skin.
Treatment is comfortable and non-invasive, making it particularly useful to consider when postoperative tissues are sensitive to touch. Your treatment plan is tailored to your surgery, recovery stage and individual needs.
