A DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is something no one wants to experience after surgery, but it does occasionally happen.

One of the questions I’ve been asked recently is “What happens with my MLD if I’m diagnosed with a DVT?”

The answer is simple. Your medical care always comes first.

If a DVT is suspected, you’ll usually be assessed by your medical team and may be sent for an ultrasound scan. If one is confirmed, treatment is commonly started with anticoagulant medication.

At that point, I pause your MLD.

Not because you’ve done anything wrong and not because your recovery has failed, but because it’s the safest thing to do while your medical team manages the clot.

Once you’ve been medically cleared by the clinician looking after your DVT, we’ll get you booked back in and continue your recovery 💞

If you’ve already got a schedule of appointments booked, don’t panic. We’ll simply rearrange them around your recovery. Healing doesn’t always go exactly to plan, and that’s absolutely okay.

One thing I’d also say is this…

Most post-op aches, swelling and discomfort are completely normal. But if something feels unusual, is getting worse, or you’re worried, always get it checked. It’s far better to be told everything is okay than to ignore something important.

Recovery after surgery isn’t always a straight line. As swelling moves through the tissues, small pockets of fluid can sometimes collect in one area during healing. This lovely client developed a small pocket just above her belly button, something I see fairly often as the body adjusts and fluid shifts in the early stages of recovery ❤️‍🩹

In this case we supported the area with lymphatic taping and compression to help encourage gentle fluid movement and reduce the localised congestion. Most small fluid collections settle with time and the right support, but if they become larger or uncomfortable they may need to be medically drained.

Her incision itself is currently being managed under nursing wound care, which is exactly where that part of recovery should sit.

Good recovery is always collaborative, the client, surgical team, nursing care and lymphatic support all playing their part to help the body heal well. And despite a few bumps along the way, she’s absolutely loving her new waist 🥹🥰❤️

This lovely client recently had the final stage of her lipoedema liposuction, this time to the front of her lower legs.

We got to work the day after her surgery, doing an intensive course of MLD as recommended by her surgeon.

The first couple of weeks were what we’d expect, a lot of swelling and firm tight tissue through the lower legs. Her right leg was being tricky and filling more than the left, which can be frustrating when you just want things to start settling.

Alongside the MLD we’ve been working closely on her compression, inc. foam supports around the inner lower legs and ankles.

Over the last few weeks things have really started to shift. The tissue is much softer and the swelling has reduced substantially. Her fuller calf is already down by 4cm.

More importantly, she says her legs finally feel lighter.

For her this isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about mobility & comfort especially with the hip issues she’s been managing for years.

We’re now moving into the maintenance phase, focusing on long term lymphatic health, compression and home management.

Compression garments are a key part of surgical recovery. The right garment supports swelling, protects healing tissues & helps everything settle comfortably as your body moves through the healing stages.

Over time I’ve come to work with a range of compression brands depending on the surgery, the area treated and the stage of recovery.

3 weeks post op: Breast lift + implants, 360 tummy tuck + lipo.

This client was healing well but swelling was settling through the lower abdomen, breasts & lower back. At this stage it’s common for support needs to change as tissues soften and posture begins to improve.

Over 4 sessions we have focused on gentle lymphatic support with targeted foam introduced to the lower abdomen and sacrum where swelling tends to linger most with this type of surgery.

By around the 3-4 week mark many clients benefit from moving into stage 2 compression. Her stage 1 garment had done its job but was no longer giving consistent compression for this phase of healing. She transitioned into a @4belluofficial Isabella garment, with an extender. The extender allows compression to be adjusted as swelling continues to reduce rather than needing another garment

After chin lipo or a neck or facelift, firmness under the chin is normal in the early weeks. The body produces collagen as part of healing, so the area can feel tight, ropey or lumpy. Most people experience this.

Little did she know…
that she would, in fact, need MLD.

I don’t usually share photos of myself like this 🙈, but this was me - day 2 post mummy makeover, feeling super sorry for myself.
I’d heard lots about lymphatic drainage through surgery Facebook groups and my surgeon had mentioned I’d need to find someone local once I was home… but honestly, I didn’t think it was that important.

Then reality hit. The swelling, the heaviness, the tightness. It’s hard to describe until you’ve lived it. I quickly realised how much my body needed help to move that fluid, to ease the pressure and to start feeling human again.

The relief I felt after that first MLD session in hospital was UNFORGETTABLE 😮‍💨 I was straight on Google searching for someone who could continue my care when I got back home. And that’s where this whole journey began.

When it comes to scars, tension counts for a lot.

Here’s 2 of my clients, the one on the right started regular MLD the day after her surgery, the woman on the left only came to me 3 months after her tummy tuck when swelling didn’t dissipate.

After a tummy tuck the skin is pulled tight to close the incision and with all the post-op swelling (especially when liposuction is involved) that tension only increases. The more pressure across the scar line, the harder it is for the tissue to heal smoothly.

That’s why so many surgeons and wound care specialists say tension is one of the biggest factors in how a scar matures.

When swelling isn’t managed properly, scars can stretch, thicken, or become raised. Not just because of skin healing on the surface, but because of what’s happening underneath.

Consistent post-op MLD helps by reducing fluid build-up and easing that internal pressure, giving the scar a better chance to settle flat and soft over time.

Of course there’s always lots of variables at play but if swelling and tension are well managed, the body can heal without fighting against itself.

My lipoedema reduction surgery clients will always hold a special place in my heart.
